We earn money and we spend money. The biggest part of our spendings consists of things we just buy for ourselves. But we do like spending money on others – friends, relatives, loved ones. The best presents are the personalized ones. Do you want to be more customer friendly? Read this article to learn how to get WooCommerce gift message option in your store.
How to add WooCommerce gift message with a plugin
First, you need the free Flexible Product Add-Ons plugin. You can download it for free from WordPress.org or install it right from your store’s plugins section searching for flexible product fields:
Once you have the plugin installed and activated, let’s configure it. Choose: Products → Product Fields in your WordPress menu. Then you need to add a new field group:
You need to specify the product(s) for which a customer will be able to order gift message. This is easy.
In the free version of the Flexible Product Fields, you have to specify products one-by-one while in the PRO version you can select either all products from a category or all products in the store.
WooCommerce Gift Message as a customer-friendly feature
Once you configured where to show the group fields, you can create and configure fields themselves. You can use any label you want. It will show on the product page and in the cart. You can set a character limit if you want to.
This is how it looks on the product page:
And in the cart, with a gift message typed:
WooCommerce Gift Message as an additional cost for customer
A message attached to a product as a letter is an additional cost for your store. It is a good idea to transfer this cost to your customers. You can set any price you want for such a feature so you can make some profit out of it, too. If you want to add a price option to the fields, you need the PRO version of Flexible Product Add-Ons plugin.
As you can see in the screenshot below, the Price type and Price settings appear after activating PRO version.
This is how the text field looks like on the product page. You should be able to notice that when the text field is empty (there’s no message typed by a customer), then the standard price value is used.
The moment your customer starts typing in the text field, an additional cost will be added to the product price.
Conditional Logic in WooCommerce Gift Message feature
Look, the text field takes a lot of space. Not everyone will be interested in this feature so why show it to them? I think that it is a good idea to place checkbox on the product page and to show the text field for gift message only when the checkbox has been checked.
Fields like this are really easy to set up. You need to add a checkbox field and then you need to activate conditional logic in the gift message field.
